Bookish

Ooh. A new exhibition proposal (and vaguely book related, for all those who turn up here in the vain hope of finding a bookcrossing.)

It is going to be in a bookshop in Broadway Market. And will feature prints inspired by our favourite books. This is the project I've been waiting for all my life.

But can I think of an idea? No.

What would choose as your favourite book, if you had to make the cover, or illustrate it?

  1. Well, my favourite book is Vile Bodies by Evelyn Waugh. So for the cover I'd have a 3D picture of Eric Pickles and John Prescott playing oily naked Twister.

  2. Thanks for that image. This is the first comment that nearly didn't make it past the comment moderation.

  3. Not exactly my favourite books, but I'd do Kate Atkinson's Human Croquet with dark fairytale-type images. Edmond Dulac gone bad. Or Julian Barnes' Arthur and George with woodcut-type suggestions of horse mutilation. Something subversive and disturbing.

  4. Horse mutilation?! shh, TB, don't let Bowleserised hear you.

I read 'Behind the Scenes...' but didn't make it any further with Kate Atkinson, I should investigate.

  5. We're also going to have an exhibition in Westfield about SHOPPING hurrah.

An idea came as I was dropping off to sleep, I'm going to do the scene from Through the Looking Glass where Alice finds herself in a shop (with a knitting sheep) but the things keep disappearing as she goes to get them from the shelves. It's always struck me as a good metaphor for consumerism, & gratification always being out of reach...

  6. Au Bonheur des Dames by Zola – the first department stores as mega, people crushing machines. The creation of desire etc.

  7. Ah, I like a bit of Zola, I don't know that one. Yes, it is a good opportunity to bite the hand that feeds us...

Just thought of another fantastic short story by Dorothy Parker about two girls going window shopping too.
